Children, do not attempt this yourselves...

Who knew that a single photographer could cause so much trouble? So, long story short. Walking on bridges under construction and taking pictures is trespassing. It alarms passing cars, all of which have cell phones and they call 911 to report you as a potential terrorist or homicidal. Thanks to the women and men who wear the blue in both cities who responded, efficiently surrounding the bridge, briefly questioned the photographer, and then watched him walk back to his car, parked a half a mile away. While this makes an interesting, if not, stunning photograph, seven police units is a lot to tie up and risk the public safety system and higher priority calls for service.

Technically, how do you do this? After picking a better location (obviously), you tripod the camera, set it at a long exposure, turn off the lens Vibration Reduction (IR, or VC) and manually focus. Use the self timer to reduce camera shake. When taking film images, remember to take into account Reciprocity failure.

This image: Nikon D200, 80mm, ISO 100, F32, 30 sec, Auto white balance. Taken October 27, 2007 at 8:01:05.6 pm.

BTW: Bonus points if you capture something closer to sunset with a hint of that deep blue left in the skies, or stars.
